About Hoover and your carry permit

Hoover is split between two counties: most of the city is in Jefferson County, and the southern part is in Shelby County. Your carry permit comes from the sheriff of the county you live in, and the two offices charge different fees and take applications differently.

Alabama hasn't required a permit to carry a pistol since January 1, 2023, but a permit still helps if you travel, since some states that honor Alabama permits don't allow permitless carry. Permits come from the sheriff of the county you live in:

Jefferson County Sheriff's Office (if you live in the Jefferson County part of Hoover)
Fees: $7.50 per year, up to 5 years ($37.50). Apply or renew online through the sheriff's permit portal, or in person at the sheriff's Birmingham headquarters (2200 Rev. Abraham Woods Jr. Blvd) or the Bessemer office. Veterans and active-duty military can get a permit at no cost by applying in person with proof of service. Sheriff's permit page
Shelby County Sheriff's Office (if you live in the Shelby County part of Hoover)
Fees: $20 for 1 year, $125 for 5 years. Print the application and mail it with a check or money order, or apply in person at 380 McDow Road in Columbiana. There is no online payment. Sheriff's permit page

Fees and steps are from each sheriff's website as of October 2026; check with the office before you apply.

Common questions

Which sheriff do I go to for a permit if I live in Hoover?
The sheriff of the county your home is in. In the Jefferson County part of Hoover, apply with the Jefferson County Sheriff (online is available). In the Shelby County part, apply with the Shelby County Sheriff in Columbiana by mail or in person.
Do I need a permit to carry a pistol in Alabama?
No. Since January 1, 2023, Alabama law has allowed adults who can legally own a handgun to carry one without a permit. Many people still get one, because other states that honor Alabama permits may not allow permitless carry.
