About Gardendale and your carry permit
Gardendale is a Jefferson County city along I-65 north of Birmingham, so residents get carry permits from the Jefferson County Sheriff, which takes applications online.
Alabama hasn't required a permit to carry a pistol since January 1, 2023, but a permit still helps if you travel, since some states that honor Alabama permits don't allow permitless carry. Permits come from the sheriff of the county you live in:
Fees: $7.50 per year, up to 5 years ($37.50). Apply or renew online through the sheriff's permit portal, or in person at the sheriff's Birmingham headquarters (2200 Rev. Abraham Woods Jr. Blvd) or the Bessemer office. Veterans and active-duty military can get a permit at no cost by applying in person with proof of service. Sheriff's permit page
Fees and steps are from each sheriff's website as of October 2026; check with the office before you apply.
